Isabelle Alford-Lago is a muralist I recently discovered perusing the internet. Her specialty is gorillas. Alford-Lago is a graduate of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and she also studied in Florence, Italy. Most of her murals are in California, but a number of her murals can be found in Philadelphia. Alford-Lago recently was exhibited in Dublin, Ireland, besides many California venues. She lives and works in Venice, California. Following is what she has to say about her work:
“My gorillas lay bare the primitive human that I like to observe and display as a character we can all relate to. In a culture defined by our media’s constructed images, idolizing our super stars, we have been led to equate being aesthetically pleasing with personal satisfaction. Despite their large hairy bodies and prominent nostrils, the gorillas redefine super star. Poised in their own nudity with genuine self-confidence, they are indifferent to social norms. I also take my work to our public space, painting the gorillas on exterior walls so they exist within our “civilized” environment, and remind us to be at peace with our own human nature.”

Beautiful. I have a huge amount of respect for muralists who create public art. Here in SoCal we have tons of such art. I’ll have to look for her work. Thanks, Denise.
