Grant Wood at the Whitney in NYC

You are probably more familiar with this artist than you think. This was my second time to see his most famous work. The first time was at the Art Institute in Chicago. The Whitney Museum of American Art was presenting an exhibition of Grant Wood‘s work. I was very impressed. The landscapes are what I would call “Leger meets Cezanne.” The Whitney Museum was spectacular. Enjoy the pics . . . I left his most famous work for last (and downloaded from the exhibition site as I could not get a good snap due to all the visitors on a wonderful Sunday in May.

Many of these landscapes are Wood’s memories of growing up in the 1890’s in Iowa . . .

I just love Wood’s trees!

As he got older and WWII was on, his style changed:

A few animal pics are next (including the human).

How about the pigs?

Grant Wood’s most famous work:

American Gothic actually depicts a father and daughter. Most people think it is a farmer and his wife.

Sadly, this talented artist died of pancreatic cancer when he was only 50 years old.

A spectacular view of the High Line and the city is a nice change of pace from all of the art . . .
